“Ice and Snow World” has a pretty cool ring to it - it’s one of the nicknames for Harbin, because it’s a centre for the art form of ice carving. The icy winds crossing Harbin from Siberia would get some towns down, but the locals have harnessed the power of the cold, and the average winter temperature here is about -17 degrees Celsius, for the purpose of fun, and they host an annual International Snow and Ice Sculpturing Festival.
But it’s not just carving a wonderland from blocks of ice and decorating them in a range of dazzling laser lit colours, the festival also features alpine skiing, winter swimming events and an ice lantern exhibition.
The length of the festival depends on the weather, but the official opening day is January 5th and it’s supposed to last a month.
