‘Alternative’ can mean a lot of things in musical terms. For three days during mid-August here at Glanusk Park, in the Brecon beacons, it centred originally around folk music and now extends to anything big that you won’t hear on a teenager’s i-pod. Robert Plant’s ethnic musical explorations and Joanna Newsom’s psychedelic folk lyricism are examples of typical contributors, who range from big names to up-and-coming local bands. As might be expected at any music festival, there is camping, international cuisine, art and alternative therapy to be enjoyed. However, the Green Man Festival is famously said to captivate its audience with the special extra dimension of its accepting, eclectic atmosphere, so hard to find in modern popular musical events, which often focus on fashion as much as art.
