Belgium's bustling Medieval city of Ghent is transformed every Summer in preparation for Europe's largest-scale cultural festival, which bursts forth as a 1.5 million-strong crowd of music and performing arts lovers. The July event is in fact built of four separate, overlapping ones: the Blue Note Festival of jazz, International Puppetbuskers Festival, the International Street Theatre Festival and the dance festival, 10 Days Off, which goes some way to explaining the festival's origins - a ten-day break for Ghent's 19th century peasants, during which they released all their pent-up holiday spirit in an immense, vigorous party. The level of enthusiasm has remained just the same!
