The Seychelles’ annual Festival Kreol is a flamboyant celebration of all things Creole, showcasing the islands’ vibrant combination of African, European, Chinese and Indian heritage. The festival opens with a massive street party, and the ensuing days feature a huge range of attractions. Two of the biggest shows are the Lakadans music and dance show, which attracts a large and energetic crowd and continues late into the night, and the Kreolisimo show, a more sedate affair, in which Seychellian musicians pay tribute to traditional Creole music. On the beaches, you can watch traditional games and sporting contests like raft racing and coconut palm climbing. There are street performances from singers, actors and storytellers, a Creole fashion show, and art, quizzes and public speaking competitions to promote Creole culture to the island’s children. Throughout the festival, you can also experience local Creole delicacies like Kari Zourit (octopus curry), Tec Tec soup (small white shellfish, usually cooked with pumpkin) and Poisson Grille (grilled fish with garlic, ginger, onions and chillis). Creole cuisine is influenced by Indian, Chinese and French cookery, making it just as vibrant and exciting as the rest of the culture, and this lively festival offers a great insight into both.
