This rough and ready, annual music festival in the small coastal town of Lorne began in an inauspicious way by a local surfer who was looking to improve his New Year Eve party by inviting some bands and holding it on nearby farm. That was in 1993, and the inaugural Falls Festival hosted nine Australian bands for one night only and attracted 11,000 people (so many that the surfer-turned-organiser had to negotiate on the spot with neighbouring farmers to allow festival goers extra party and tent space.).

The festival is now a three day camping event and has two locations running gigs at the same time, the other in Marion Bay, Tasmania. Huge Australian and international acts now play the gig (many who rock the Falls Festival before they tour with the Big Day Out season.), and organisers have added a ‘Village’ of smaller venues where you can learn yoga, see a film, laugh along with comedians and get some exotic (but very decent by festival standards) grub.

The weather is hot, the audience enthusiastic, the bands rocking and the campsites fairly civilised considering the numbers of tents. Lots of people over recent years have started bringing their wading pools to the event to keep cool…
