Steeped in indelible Welsh cultural and artistic history, the National Eisteddfod lasts for a week in August and is one of Europe's oldest arts celebrations, dating back to 1176 when poets and musicians competed for a chair at the lord's table each year. It is proudly conducted entirely in Welsh and celebrates druidic and bardic traditions as well as modern Welsh music, poetry and performing arts. The venue alternates between North and South Wales each year and a different greenfield site is chosen each time, marked ever after by a new ring of standing stones.
