No one quite knew exactly what the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was supposed to be when it kicked off in 1999. A celebration of the arts in the small town of Indio, California, its first performance headlined with major bands like Jurassic 5 and Rage Against the Machine. Years later, the crowd has grown from an initial 25,000 to a whopping 180,000 alternative music loving hipsters, scenesters, rockers, mods, and more.

Dozens of artists across a spectrum of genres perform for three days straight on five stages across the festival grounds. On-sight camping in tents is a crowd favorite, but tickets tend to sell out quickly and there are a lot of off-site accommodations available as well. The event lasts three days in the hot Southern California heat, so drink plenty of water along with whatever other substances you put into your body. One-day and three-day passes are available, with the cheaper one-day passes going very quickly. It’s a wild throwback to the Woodstock era, not to be missed by music lovers of any persuasion.
