Though Burns Night is very much an event for friends and family in Scotland (which is possibly one reason why the English often borrow the tradition and stay at home instead of making the trip to Robbie's homeland), there are plenty of events there that can provide a proper Burns supper, at which things are done in the right order and you'll be able to eat haggis without having to make sense of cooking it yourself.

Burns Night is on 25th January, the poet's birthday, and follows the general format of a welcome speech, the Selkirk Grace, and then the piping in of the haggis, which is honourably dismembered to the accompaniment of a reading of Burns's 'Address to a Haggis'. Then you toast the demise of the chieftain o' the puddin-race, and you're helped to neeps and tatties and all sorts of other indulgent, seasonal delicacies besides, after which there are more toasts and speeches and with any luck, lots of sozzled poetry readings and Scottish dancing!

Head for Edinburgh's Prestonfield Hotel for serious gourmet indulgence, or try Stirling Castle for large-scale, evocative grandeur and compulsory Highland dress. Also in Edinburgh, children might enjoy the Scottish Storytelling Centre's mix of songs, poems and stories to accompany their supper, or you might even want to try the City Cafe for an alternative, poetry-focused evening.
