Bridgwater Carnival is considered to be the biggest and best of a series of parades in the Somerset area. Usually scheduled for the Friday (evening) closest to Guy Fawkes night (5th November). Over 160 entries of people on foot and magnificent illuminated floats take to the streets for a parade that takes about 2 hours to pass by. The biggest floats are lit by thousands of lightbulbs (alas not energy saving!) and are the result of a year of planning, creativity and technical building by the carnival club gangs. The parade is rounded off by the traditional and unique display of 'Squibbing' which involves hundreds of roman candle fireworks being lit in the town's High Street and held up above the crowds to produce a great pyrotechnic experience. OK - admittedly this is not a 'world event' that sits up with the Rio Mardi Gras, but visitors do come from far and wide and go away with a great night of entertainment and wonder.
