For the past nine hundred years, the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering has been a resolutely royal affair. Held near Balmoral, summer home for the British royal family, thousands of spectators flock to see the games each year, including the Queen herself. Clans from the neighboring highlands battle it out in "heavy" events including weight throwing and shots along with hill racing and tug-of-war among others. If you're not motivated by the idea of sweaty Scots then perhaps you will find the sound of bag pipes floating through the nearby hills to be the most moving part of the experience. Also be sure to not miss the Scottish dancing in Highland attire, each dance troupe displaying their tartan. Kick up your heels and join 'em, but kicking up your kilt is not recommended.
