Aside from tempting visitors in for shopping and sight-seeing, Bath attracts a literary crowd in its own right due to its having been the home of Jane Austen – whether because of the movies or her novels themselves – and the Bath Literature Festival is a logical and highly successful extension of the celebrations of her influence. It's a relatively young gathering in literary festival terms - the inaugural event was only held in 1995 – but it attracts some of the best national and international names in fiction, poetry, journalism and politics as well as local stars, and there's a fantastic range of events for children besides a wonderland of workshops, readings, debates, film showings, books signings, theatre performances, lectures, guided tours and competitions, which take place as part of a dense ten-day schedule – and there's plenty of food and drink to indulge in as well as talk and read about.
