Long before flying became a perfunctory experience, Zeppelin airships were developed in Friedrichshafen, and offered the luxury of drifting slowly through the air as much for pleasure as for the purpose of reaching a destination. In the 1930s, these giant, silent airships epitomised the excitement of transatlantic travel, shifting gently in the wind, moving slowly and low enough to allow passengers to observe the ground rolled out beneath them in all its detail. Today, they have great relevance in terms of environmental impact, producing a minimal carbon footrint and almost no sound pollution, but they really come into their own as sightseeing vehicles. The cabins are lined with knee-to-ceiling windows and are just a fraction of the width of a commercial plane cabin, so passengers have a constant panoramic view, and can watch the shadow of the zeppelin creeping across the landscape below.
