If you have ever wanted to know how it must feel to drive or command a tank in battle, the experiences available at the Dinscott Military Collection in Bude may be able to take you at least some of the way there. Amongst their comprehensive collection of post-war British military vehicles and Cold War weaponry are two armoured monsters, the GKN Fv 432, a 14-tonne, 240 horsepower personnel carrier, and the 55-tonne Chieftain which, if you can wrestle its steering into submission, delivers 750 horsepower. Very few functional Chieftains remain in the UK so although availability is limited, the effort is worthwhile. Both of these can be driven round a specially designed course after full instruction in driving techniques and proper procedure, and you can even take control in the commander's seat on the turret of the Chieftain.
