Thrilling, noisy, risky and addictive, cross country motorcycling originated as 'Scrambles' in the 1920s, and has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Rigid-framed bikes and simple off-road tracks gave way to springy suspension, huge jumps and obstacles and immensely powerful bikes, and it is now a popular competitive sport in the UK and USA. Exceptional physical fitness and keen concentration are vital for success, and accidents are common, but at Cwmythig Hill Motocross Circuit, beginners and professionals alike are welcome. Regarded as one of the best motocross circuits around, it is cut into a hillside and has an exhilarating combination of man-made obstacles and jumps and natural challenging features. It plays host to the annual Rhayader Midweek Motocross series, an unofficial nationwide competition, but still one of the most high-profile, so although it is a competition-level venue, public access is allowed and amateurs can compete against champions on equal terms.
