The Luge, or ‘buttboard’, was developed in California as an adapted version of the skateboard, to allow the user to ride it lying on their back. It is around four feet long, and has a non-slip panel to reduce the risk of a rider slipping off at possible speeds of 70mph – far greater than any skateboarding speed.

The proximity to the ground and lack of suspension means that any speed feels much faster than it is, and plenty of injuries are sustained at street luging races, so professional luge pilots wear full motorcycling gear at all times.

International competitions are held worldwide and are organised by the International Gravity Sports Association. If you fancy a challenge, ride the infamous Glendora Mountain Road, which is 4000 feet up in the San Gabriel Mountains, and twists and curls like a piece of spaghetti.
