This must surely be one of the best ways to remind yourself that nature is, after all, in control. It is necessary to hook up with an expert, mainly to ensure that you go to the right places at the right times for a full experience, but also for safety reasons. The average storm chasing day commences with a weather forecast quite alien to the customary sort, followed by a speedy ride in a highly-equipped storm chasing van to the nearest supercell thunderstorm, which could be anywhere in Tornado Alley, a glorious stretch of open land beneath vast, empty skies, taking in parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Coal-black twisters over glowing golden cornfields, giant hailstones glancing off sun-baked ground and crackling forked lightning against black skies make for one of nature's most awesome shows.
