The perfect adrenalin booster, a first skydive begins with near overwhelming apprehension and ends with something akin to an addiction. To conquer your instinct for self-preservation and leap from a plane on purpose is a huge confidence builder as well as an experience of overwhelming, thrilling beauty. This is the closest we will ever get to flying unaided, and it is well worth the initial nerves. But if even the excitement of falling at 120mph from 12,000 feet over a disused airfield is wearing thin for you, it may be time to head for Monterey Bay, one of the best places for the highest possible skydive. The weather conditions are clear, warm and breezy on an almost constant basis, meaning that jumps from up to 18,000 feet are possible - the highest altitude jumps consistently available worldwide. But the extra few seconds of freefalling thrill are only part of the attraction, as the views here are quite magnificent: Santa Cruz and the lush, green Salinas Valley stretch to the unbelievably blue National Marine Sanctuary of Monterey Bay itself, and the Pacific Ocean beyond.
