Still regarded more as a movie stunt than a sport by most, BASE jumping is notably more dangerous than many comparable activities such as skydiving due to the lower altitude, but its practitioners consider it superior due to the variety in jumps and the raw excitement of throwing yourself from a vertigo-inducing static object. New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville in West Virginia is one of the world's best known BASE jump sites, as BASE jumping is legal there every October 15th, the anniversary of the bridge's construction. The date is a local festival, and tens of thousands visit to party on the bridge during the BASE jumping convention. Suspended over New River, one of North America's most ancient and fastest moving rivers, and surrounded by lush forest, the bridge is 3,030 feet high, and peering over the edge, you can certainly believe it.
