Lelekawa Cliff Diving

Listed under Extreme Challenge in US East Coast, United States.

The ancient sport of Lelekawa is a heart-stopping thrill to undertake, and riveting to watch. It is said to have originated in 1770, here in Hawaii, when an island king tested his men's skill and loyalty by asking them to jump into the sea from a high cliff without making a splash. Soaring cliffs and deep, still waters are essential to success, so some of the best cliff diving sites in the world are also set in some of the most beautiful places. Waimea Valley is certainly no exception. It stretches back from the famous surf site, Waimea Bay, for a mile or so through a steamy, multi-hued forest to a waterfall, 45 feet high and part of the blissfully natural Waimea Falls Park. Foliage-covered, chunky grey rock encircles a deep azure pool below, and celebratory traditional cliff diving displays are given by local divers to show you how it is done.
