Ecotourism in the dead of Winter can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and the biting Arctic winds of Northern Canada are more than compensated for by the dense populations of wildlife, local Inuit art and festivals, whale watching and the flicker of the Northern Lights after dark. Though not for the faint-hearted, there is an option to take the wilderness experience one step further by learning how to build your own igloo and snuggling down for the night in the result, more than amply protected from the -33C outside. After hours spent cutting wind-compressed snow into dense bricks, and even fitting a block of transparent ice in the roof to let the morning light in, what could be more satisfying than an evening sharing stories round the kulliq lamp?
