This 19km gorge and the countryside around it have long been considered one of the most beautiful spots in Taiwan. The marble of the gorge has been much admired, as it's been revealed by the waters of the river that's exposed it, and there are deposits of jade nearby as well. As well as the gorge, the national park has several named natural sites, some which may conjure up familiar images to the mind: the Tunnel of Nine Turns, a particularly steep section of river gorge, the Swallow's Mouth another narrow tunnel, Jhueilu Precipice and Wenshan hot spring, but one of the most amazing things about this national park is the incredible range of terrain relief that's covered, from coastal cliffs to subtropical canyons to coniferous forests. More than 250 different species of butterfly live here.
The Eternal Spring Shrine and the Bridge of the Kind Mother are other beautiful local monuments, this time added by human hands.
