Anyone who has seen white Lipizzaner horses soaring through the air in a capriole understands how the myth of Pegasus can persist. What rider has not dreamed of flying with such an animal? You can come close by riding in Lipica, the area in Western Slovenia (near the Italian border) that gave these horses their name.
Even better – you don’t have to be an expert rider. Lipizzaners are intelligent, responsive, and eager to please.
Packages for novices can be three days to a week or more; expert riders can opt for group or individual instruction in the fine points of dressage. Two hotels in Sežana (the name of the local town) offer different kinds of accommodation: the Hotel Maestoso (named for one of the outstanding Lipica stallions) and the more rustic Hotel Klub.
When you have finished your lessons, you can tour the stud farm, one of the oldest in the world, watch performances or classes of the famed riding school, or tour the grounds in a horse-drawn cart. Contac Kobilarna Lipica, Lipica 5, SI-6210 Sežana
