Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Mr. Piano's new Conservatoire)

Listed under Contemporary Architecture in Rome, Italy.

Yes, this really is the architects name! The new conservatoire is situated out of the city at the site of an ancient home (some of which has been left exposed and may be viewed through a glass window). Now a few years old, the conservatoire has an embrionic feel and the acoustics both inside and out are quite remarkable. Very shell-like, the halls host world-wide orchestras (most particularly the Berlin Philharmonic) and many other genres of music and the attached music store is full of the most wonderfully educated people very eager to please (as only Romans can!).

The local eateries are booked for supper both before and after performances so be sure to book early! Light bites and sumptuous pavement meals along with seasonal fare offered inside the pavement restaurants have to be experienced but be sure to book your taxi at the desk inside the Conservatoire and obtain your taxi reference e.g. "Blue five" or you will be stranded for the night!
