Located inside of the Nantahala National Forest, the Nantahala River is surrounded by many National Forests in the area. Cherokee National Forest, Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky National Forest are just a handful of the parks and designated area that surround the Nantahala River and its surroundings. The river begins from the Nantahala Mountains and ends in Georgia, at the Fontana Lake near the Georgia – North Carolina state line. A lot is packed into this fairly short river of only 40 miles.
White water rafting and kayaking are among some of the most popular activities along the river. Certain sections of the Nantahala River have railways lining the riverside, hiking trails and campgrounds. The different sections of the river offer a wide variety of North Carolina rafting experiences, anywhere from experienced class IV rapids to moderate class I-III rapids. It is a location great for families and groups, and the scenery is wonderful.
Over a quarter of a million people visit the river each year, making it one of the hottest spots in the country.
