This theatre, built in about 1824, isn’t just old, it’s also authentically old. The interior has really good period copies of the wooden chairs and three tiers of boxes that were originally installed. It was restored in the 40’s so even the period reproductions are antiques in their own right. All the fuss over the detail could be because this is one of the oldest free standing stages still in use – and it is – a season of dance, opera, musical theatre, drama and other cultural events and presentations is put on each year, with a definite leaning towards traditional, local productions.

The layout is in the Italian horseshoe style with three tiers, very opera house-y, and the stage has been graced by greats such as ballerina Anna Pavlova and soprano Adelina Patti. If you’re going to see a show, see it in style here, the Teatro Tapia has been the opulent, Italianate cultural hub of Old San Juan for hundreds of years now. The photos of the interior really make it look worth the effort.
