Giara are plateaus formed of basalt, rising out of the Sardinian interior like huge natural fortresses protecting the diversity of life that survives atop them, and the Giara di Gesturi is the largest, about 42 kilometres square and levelling off at about 560m from sea level. One of the most wondrous of the preserved species living here are the small horses, supposedly the last bastion of the descendants of the first group brought to Sardina by the Phoenicians around 2,500 years ago. They could easily walk down into the valley where there’s more vegetation and water, but they stay up here on the plateau.

Lakes have formed in the basalt cracks and filled with water plants and been surrounded by thirsty flowers and forests of cork trees have sprouted, but generally these are dry places.

Spring is the best time to visit, when the air is filled with visiting water fowl and other birds and the goats, wild boar and ponies are having their little ones.
