Under the water of AuAu Canyon

Listed under Diving in Hawaii, United States.

A deep and beautiful dive where hammerheads power gracefully by, first below and then above you as you go lower and the blue of the water darkens to a bright dark colour lined with the green light you get in Hawaii. The largest hammerhead I ever saw I saw here, in a school, stealthily pacing monk seals barreling off. The coral heads you pass as you surface are beautiful, as they open upwards, growing towards the sunshine, and nudibranchs thrive here.

Shaped by lava, now grown over with coral ridges which have narrow vents and gullies the terrain is interesting and visibility clear.

Au Au Canyon

This site is a lagoon formed by a large, entirely submerged volcanic crater. The walls are full of holes of varying sizes, perfect for marine animals to live in.

There are several crater dive sites in Hawaii, but AuAu Canyon is the only spot that is entirely submerged, so the animal life is different and the terrain unique.
