'The Wall' Dive, Glover's Reef

Listed under Diving in Belize.

‘The Wall’ is only one of the Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve dives. The reserve exists because of the huge range of coral the reefs are growing with and variations in the reefs themselves – which also qualify Glover’s as being an incredibly interesting place to dive. The wall in question is on the reefs eastern side on the edge, sloping downwards away from the reef’s sunlit surface to about 130ft below where there is a sand bar and wire coral bundles (like barbed wire.) before sinking another 220ft. The shallow end of the wall has overhangs where the most interesting wire and soft corals flourish (the sun gets under but fish prefer to peck around the surface. Coral ridges are split by more channels and vertical rock surfaces, off which corals grow at interesting angles creating a kind of three dimensional garden.

The Wall

Glover’s Reef can only be reached by boat so it quieter than other local dive sites. It offers divers thick black coral and groupers and the famous Wall, the coral covered face of the continental shelf, where the sea floor drops dramatically away to 3000 feet in just one and a half kilometres.
