Two reefs wriggle their way out of the Red Sea floor creating an interesting underwater environment at the tip of the Ras Muhammad National Park. The reefs are like tiny atolls, flat on top, and there, and in the steep sides are where the best corals grow. There are plenty of good spots to see marine life in a rainbow of colours and species in the Red Sea, but this site I found to be quieter than most.
The Yolanda side of the reef is larger and more colourful, it also caused the downfall of the ship it took its name from. There isn’t much left of the wreck, which is to the south of the reef, just seabed litter. It went down carrying ceramic bathroom furniture, and regulars say toilet bowls must have some strange attraction to eels who have colonised them in large numbers, as have fire corals, which sit threateningly on the rims - this makes for an interesting photo - but be careful, fire corals sting. As well as the morays, divers will cross paths with snappers, trunk fish, barracudas and jacks.
It’s about 20 to 50 metres down, but the warm water and good visibility make it a comfortable dive. It’s separated from land by a channel so no wonder the Yolanda was wrecked here. Again it’s more suited to advanced divers. Go in the summer months for the most colourful selection of fish.
