Kosrae is one of the smaller islands in the Federated States of Micronesia. Its only 42 square miles, but is loaded with rich culture and colorful history. Popular among scuba divers, surfers, and sport fishing enthusiasts, the island is surrounded by tropical coral reefs abundant with marine life.
Scuba divers will enjoy healthy coral reefs and crystal clear visibility at dive sites like Malem's Reef, Blue Hole and Shark Island. In some areas there are dive site markers all the way up and down the reef, so there is plenty of variety for those divers who want to spend more time there. This island is also a nice stop-over when traveling to places like Truk Lagoon.
Topside attractions include the ancient Lelu Ruins, Wiya Bird Cave, Sipyen and Saolong Waterfalls, outrigger mangrove tours, and bird watching. There are amazing hiking trails around Mt. Oma and in many other areas.
There are a handful of small hotels and several nicer resorts, such as Kosrae Nautilus Resort. There are not a lot of restaurants, so for first time visitors staying at a resort is a good idea. KNR has a great restaurant that is often frequented by the locals.
Airline service to the island is only available through Continental Micronesia through Honolulu and/or Guam.
