Willy’s Hole is part of a dive that the locals call The Maze, which is an area with lots of rocky canyons and sand channels about ten metres down near the edge of the continental shelf. Willy’s Hole itself is one of the biggest canyons in the area and it’s got the best and most fish of the dive. I saw heaps of goliath groupers, sea chubs, sergeant majors, and lots of big fish I couldn‘t tell you the name of (sorry), I also say a couple of large rays. I saw lots of large coral heads, sea fans and pipe worms, which are so strange looking that I spent ages watching them pop in and out watching me. When I was there it was pretty calm - locals say the calmer the better, ‘cause you get the best view, and in the shallows it was like glass and I could get up close to coral on the pinnacles. Willy’s Hole is a wall dive, starting from about four and a half metres to about 45 and at the bottom there are some pretty exciting narrow stretches and swim throughs which I fit through, just - my first try on the smallest one I bashed my tank.
I went to Utila to dive in Turtle Harbour and see whale sharks and I wasn’t disappointed. There weren’t any around The Maze, on the first day I went, but on the second day I was pretty close to it and I saw two. I also went to Utila to wall dive, cause there are a couple of good ones there and it’s not something to do much locally, and because it’s pretty cheap to dive there. Another good dive I did on this trip was called Black Hills.
