On the cooler edge of Australia technically facing Antarctica and getting hit by the winds that blow off it is Kangaroo Island. You’d think the cooler water (around 20 degrees) and winds would make diving here a bit of a waste of time but it’s not. On the lee side of the island there is a kind of man made extra channel where the dive boats park up and this protected bit is where weedy sea dragons and beautiful leafy sea dragons (one of the most unusual and unique looking animals of Australia’s large selection) crowd in forests of kelp (which they look just like.). Leafy sea dragons really look just like miniature story book dragons. Because we’re looking out at Antarctica you also get seals and sea lions coming through to play with divers which is pretty incredible.
