The corals of the Maldives have in some places suffered from serious bleaching, but around Kudarah Thila, which is a coral bommie or pinnacle outcrop, it still grows at its colourful and abundant best, bushes of black coral mixing with the soft corals in pinks and oranges and the large gorgonians. Divers diving here will see that from the off, on the great coral arch that mark the beginning of the dive. Anthias, batlips, angelfish, ells, groupers and nudibranch, among others, swim all over it and there are thousands of blue striped snapper living round this reef. Further on there are overhangs with impressive coral growing on the roofs.

This dive starts at 12 metres and sinks to about 40. When there’s a current up this dive is better suited to experienced or open water divers. If you have time you can traverse the entire reef – it’s only about 100 meters in diameter, but if the current is up most guides will keep you round the less side and let you wander between the pinnacles with the thousands of snapper.
