Diving and snorkeling the Somosomo Strait

Listed under Diving in Fiji.

More soft coral than I have seen anywhere else and growing in beautiful, delicate looking clumps amongst seductively swaying anemones, a paradise for both fish and divers.

There are plenty of great sites in the straight, catering to tastes in walls, big fish, colour, rocky shapes, it’s just a matter of what you like to dive amongst, but Rainbow Reef, the name says it all, is one of the highlights if you like corals and colour.

“Some soft coral and cool fish”

I heard great things about diving in this area but maybe a bit too much hype about how great "the Great White Wall" was. Much of the hard coral has ended up in piles of rubble due to coral bleaching. There was some soft coral but most of it wa… Read more...

“Fish Factory Vauna Reef”

“Coral Gardens”

Tavenui is well known for being pretty on top, it’s called Fiji’s ‘Garden Island’ but it’s pretty breathtaking underneath as well. The seabed has been scarred by lava run offs which smooth out certain places and are like ridges in others where the sandy… Read more...

The Somosomo Strait

Some of the best diving and snorkeling sites in Fiji are located in the Somosomo Strait and it is particularly renowned for its many varieties of soft coral. Divers can also expect to meet a range of marine life including manta rays, blue ribbon eels, sharks and sea turtles.

One of the most famous dives in the Somosomo Strait is the Great White Wall, a reef wall densely covered in pale blue coral that appears to give off a white glow in the dim light.

The attraction of nearby dive Rainbow’s End is its multi-hued soft coral, alive with nudibranchs, sea anemones and sea stars; and The Fish Factory has fish in their thousands, in all shapes sizes and colours, including divers favourite, the reef titan triggerfish who can be seen building their nests out of dead coral.
