Something like a giant diving resort? El Gouna is an excellent place to learn to dive. As well as being well set up as far as hire and teaching facilities the water is warm and there is a pretty generous choice of diving terrain starting at calm coral reefs, also fine for snorkellers, to some of the best and most easily accessible wrecks. Almost all the dives beyond beginner level you have to get a boat out to. The three which people probably have heard talk of most are ‘Dolphin House’ which is like a giant, dolphin heavy aquarium, The ‘Ship Graveyard’ which has the remains of four wrecks now entirely colonised with marine life – fish of all shapes, sizes and colours are everywhere – and Sha’ab Ruhr which is the edge of the reef and has a deep drop off and plenty of local pelagics.

Dolphins like it around here as well.

El Gouna

El Gouna is the closest town to some of the best of Egypt’s northern dive sites including the Abu Nuhas wrecks and the WW2 wreck of the Thistlegorm. There is a huge variety of smaller marine life here and a good chance of seeing Bottle Nosed Dolphins and turtles.

The whole ares is quite crowded in the peak season between September and November, but the still warm in May and June and it’s a lot quieter.
