The waters surrounding the Maldivian atolls are bright blue and clear, revealing the many lines of reef that lie just below the surface. The sea here is quite calm and warm, but there’s a lot of movement happening within – and in many places the water is clear enough to see some marine action without even putting your head under water. But for divers and snorkellers the temptation will potentially be too great. For them Fushifaru Thila might be a good place to start.
This dive site is a channel separating two ribbons of reef on the edge of an atoll. The waters around the atoll are a protected marine area and it’s though this channel that the hammerhead sharks, grey reef sharks, barracudas and manta and eagle rays pass. Out of the channel divers can see smaller fish ducking and diving on top of the table reef on one side of the channel. The soft coral of the reef in blooming health and sweetlip, snapper and fusilier thrive amongst it along the shallow ledges of reef, while turtles and reef sharks prefer to inhabit the edges.
At its shallowest point the reef lies in only about 10 metres of water so this dive spot is suitable for beginners.
