Tavenui is well known for being pretty on top, it’s called Fiji’s ‘Garden Island’ but it’s pretty breathtaking underneath as well. The seabed has been scarred by lava run offs which smooth out certain places and are like ridges in others where the sandy floor has worn away. You can trace the lava from the shore in several places, one of then a dive site called ‘Coral Gardens’, where the corals grown and thicken as you follow the lava streams.
Soft corals seem to cope best with the shallower waters and the hard corals start to grow in further down. The size of the fish increases with depth as well, smaller guys like anemonefish and squirrelfish are at the top of the ridge and triggers, surgeonfish, bannerfish and boxfish start to find homes further down. Tuna and barracuda, and I’m told from time to time a hammerhead are at the end of the ridge, but by this point the sand has worn more and there are tunnels and swim-throughs to play around in.
This sight is a good one for beginners who could later try out another local favourite, the ‘Fish Factory’.
