Barracuda Point, Sipadan Island

Listed under Diving in Malaysia.

From the name, you’d be expecting Barracudas and you wouldn’t be wrong. Jacks join them in schools amongst the corals which grow out for flat stretches in large fields. Turtles, white tips, groupers, wrasse, reef sharks, parrot fish, tuna and frog fish cruise the corals as well, but the barracudas are like a flock of birds or something, like a flurry that blocks out the sun. And there are literally thousands of them. There’s a current here which comes off the top of a wall bringing in all the food, which is why both the coral and fish gather.

Sipadan is a tiny, tiny island, and after being used in the same sentence as the Galapagos it became so crowded that it started to get a bit environmentally precarious, so all the resorts on the island were closed so you now have to go for a liveaboard or boat in from resorts on other nearby islands.

Best visibility is between April and December when you can hope for up to 30m.
