Spanning the length of California, the Sonoran desert's warm winters make it comparatively hospitable and it's home to black bears, elks and other mammals as well as the protected tiger salamanders, Gila monsters and the usual reptilian and avian desert inhabitants. It also boasts the highest plant diversity of any desert region, comprising giant, expanding saguaro cacti (prickly pears) and several exceptionally beautiful flowering ephemerals which bloom only once in every few decades.

The Sonora Mountains in the south hid Geronimo's camp in 1851 and there is a wealth of Spanish Colonial history to explore.
