The Mojave, named after its indigenous tribe, crosses the borders of California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona and famously includes the Death Valley National Park, the hottest place in North America, reaching a sweltering 54C in summer. It and three other national parks support some miraculously adaptive wildlife; porcupines, cougars, wolves, sidewinders, roadrunners and golden eagles to name a few.

People manage to live in this desert, in small towns such as Barstow and Mesquite, and Las Vegas floats like a gambler's mirage in a sea of sand. Deserted boomtowns built during the gold rush and ghostly, disused gold mines break up the landscape.
