John Wayne famously said of the high desert around Moab "This is where God put the West." Some of the most spectacular features are found in Arches National Park, a mecca for lovers of desert scenery. Huge, heavily fractured fault blocks of sandstone, variously colored white, brown and red, are exposed for hundreds of square miles, forming mind-blowing scenery. Arches National Park has over 3000 rock arches in addition to countless pinnacles and towers. Double Arch is an aesthetic masterpiece; Landscape Arch is an impossibly slender thread of stone more than a football field in length; and the often-photographed Delicate Arch is very popular with Japanese tourists due to its resemblance to a traditional torii or sacred gate.
