The Badlands is a region like no other. The harsh alien landscape is a place of extremes, blazing like a furnace in summer and locked in a deep freeze in winter. Roads and hiking trails allow you to explore some of the most unique and famous scenery on Earth, but be sure to bring plenty of water. In some areas one can find 30 million year old fossils of extinct mammals, and living herds of Bighorn Sheep are often seen despite the desolation. Nearby are the Pine Ridge Sioux Indian reservation and the lovely Black Hills.

Badlands National Park

The Badlands National Park is located in southwest South Darkota. This fossil bed used to be home to large land mammals such as the saber-toothed tiger, rhinos and horses. Now the park is 244,000 acres and contains both grass areas and large rock deposits. Some of the animals in the area are bighorn sheep, black-footed ferrets, prairie dogs and deer. The Badlands National Park is not only for visitors but also for education. Many exhibits are available for visitors including prairie ecology, cultural history and paleontology. There is also a hands on activity for children where they can assemble a skeleton on a computer as well as touch a fossilized animal cast. Camping, exploring, hiking, activities, food and shopping are all available in the park or in the surrounding area.

You can explore this region by yourself if you'd prefer to - you just need maps of the roads and walking trails and to do from there. You can even cycle,
