You may never have thought of yourself as a cruise ship passenger, but if the Galapagos is on your list of places to see before you die then this is an excellent way to do it. If this is on your list of 'places-I'd-love-to-see', then you'll already know that around 1,200 endemic species of plants, birds, mammals and marine creatures live on these remote and stunning islands. There are various ways to explore: diving and snorkelling and sea kayaking are the best ways to see the marine live, and hiking into the rugged interior is the best way to see the rest of the island's wonder, and most cruises offer day excursions in varied degrees of difficulty to suit most travellers.

Most itineraries depart from Baltra, Punta Suarez, and may stop at Puerto Egas - where you hike over trails of black lava, Puetro Ayora – the largest settlement within the island group – good for snorkelling and scuba diving, Las Bachas – one of the nicest beaches, most of them are black and volcanic but this one is white and Bartolome - where all those incredible photos of the sea lions and penguins come from.

Only a very small number of people are allowed to visit each year to minimise the environmental impact, and staying on a boat is an excellent way to do this, but you do need to book early.
