This is not a place for amateurs but the big goal for many people getting into ski mountaineering. It’s a test piece, a flagship descent, dangerous you-fall-you-die type skiing in some of the most fantastic scenery imaginable. Grand Teton has multiple ski routes to suit your fear factor (all with mandatory rappels), the weather and your perfect idea of the balance between climbing and skiing. The descent is the big thrill - totally different from back country at a ski resort. When you’re up there clicking into your bindings getting ready for the big zoom down hill… It’s pretty exciting stuff if you live for this. The skiing isn’t always the best and the snow isn’t always perfect but this is being out there in the mountains, amongst the elements having a big scary adventure. Being in the mountains is my church.

If you’re from out of town get a guide, it will help. I made my first attempt in 1999 and it took five or six goes, it’s worth it every time, but it proves you need to work up to it.
