The reefs off this arch of small volcanic islands are in a perfect position to take advantage of the nutritious water of the Java trench, which is why it’s here you can find coral surviving in deeper water than in most other coral reef growths. These reefs host a fantastic biodiversity of life, it wouldn’t be exaggerating to imagine that there would be up to 1,000 different fish species living on one large reef plate and the colours are incredible. Deeper water allows larger marine life to share the area and there are representatives from both the very bottom and very top of the food chain, read sperm whales, rays, reef sharks and sea cows. Above ground this island group is characterised as rocky rather than the tropical rainforest paradises of nearby Bali and Borneo.
