This long reef runs in a rough arch about 18 miles long just off the British Virgin Island of Anegada. Its unpredictable shape has claimed the bounty of many ships, which just add to the reef’s exploration appeal, some of the ships which sank here were carrying pirate treasure. Coral heads surround the outer ribbons of reef but because the waters here are so violent the reef grows in flat stumps rather than elegant fingers and fringes. Boulder coral and elkhorn and other hard corals are the most successful, and the great visibility of the shallow waters make up for the lack of colour and detail. Snorkelling is probably better than diving.
Anegada Island is flat, the tallest parts only a few metres above sea level, and in choppy seas is looks like the entire island vanishes. Turtles nest along some of the beaches, a species of rock iguanas eek out their ancient existence and flamingos strut their stuff on land.

Anegada Reef, is the third largest barrier reef in the world and stretches approximately 18 miles. It has claimed hundreds of shipwrecks, yachts, and small boats over the past centuries, making it a divers dream. The coral and marine life also make the reef a diving paradise.
