Gehry's first European commission, he was helped by Gunter Pfeifer. They deviated from his usual sculptural deconstructivist style, using only white plaster and a titanium zinc alloy as materials, and using curves to intrude on his habit of angular shapes. Le Corbusier's Notre-Dame du Haut seems an influence, which is located nearby. The museum was originally intended as a private collection for Vitra's CEO, and its elevated role as a museum now is expressive of the fact that, as a whole, the building is coherent, interesting and unnatural-looking with its towers, ramps and cubes.
