Commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright was not difficult for this project: he lived in Oak Park and was himself a Unitarian, his great-great-grandfather, Jenkin Jones, having founded the Unitarian sect. AIA consider this building one of his 17 most important to American culture. Wright divided the community space with a middle loggia, which could be approached from either side. The benefit of a bipartite design was that noise from incoming visitors was isolated from service attendees, while benfitting from high-placed windows. Steel-reinforced concrete was the principle material used in construction to reduce costs. The building also benefited from fantastic acoustics.
