Headquarters of US Department of Defence and one of the world's largest office buildings, it has three times the floor space of the Empire State Building. The site was formerly called, ironically enough, Hell’s Bottom before housing the Pentagon. Built only as a temporary military workhouse for WWII, and as large as two Empire State Buildings, the huge structure consumed almost half a million cubic yards of concrete, with construction proceeding so quickly that portions of the building were completed without the benefit of architects’ or engineers’ drawings. The shape, although symbolising both benevolence and malevolence, depending on perspective, was apparently only pentagonal due to the shape of the land acquired.
