The only skyscraper designed by Frank Lloyd Wright ever built, and he referred to it as a lone tree escaped from the forest, having been a design for residential property in New York until the Depression. The design was literally based on a tree and its branches, using a cantilever system from the primary shaft in the centre, that housed the plumbing, elevators, and air conditioning. The floors were offshoots of this core shaft, generally comprised of one quadrant for apartment space and three quadrants for office space, four on each floor. A penthouse apartment occupies the top two floors. The exterior of the building continues the tree theme and is made of concrete, copper and glass.
